MAKING ZTOOL EYELASHES IN ZBRUSH
MAKE FINE EYELASHES FOR POSER/DAZ3D MODEL IN ZBRUSH
back to tutorials
BEFORE YOU START

To complete this tutorial you will need the following:

1. Victoria 2 Head.obj mesh (Any mesh head obj can suffice)
2. The FULL version of ZBrush 1.23B (available at DAZ3D store)

If you do not own the full ZBrush 1.23B, I recommend downloading their DEMO available
from Pixologic here. You can create ZTool eyelashes with the demo but it is better to use a large canvas which is only supported in the full version .

It is assumed that you will have a basic working knowledge of Poser and ZBrush and that you are familiar with the general interface in both applications. This is a PC tutorial and has not been tested on a Mac.

WHY DO THIS TUTORIAL

Figure 1.

If you followed the Victoia 2 eyelash mesh removal tutorial you have created yourself a V2 head that can be used in this tutorial.

The head should NOT have the protruding mesh eyelash or raised eyebrows shown in Figure 2.

If you use poser a lot you will know that you create eyelashes by applying a transparency map to a geometry eyelash. This isn't possible in ZBrush so we can create a ZTool eyelash by using the Multimarker tool

Figure 2.
IMPORT AND POSITION A HEAD

-Import the head into ZBrush (Click here if you don't know how)

-In ZBrush, resize the canvas to 2000x2000.
DOCUMENT>MODIFIERS and change Width to 2000 and height to 2000

-Create 2 new layers. These will be needed later but it helps to do it now.
LAYERS>INVENTORY>CREATE twice

Figure 3.
-Click/drag the imported mesh head into the document window. Any size.

-Enter EDIT mode (T). Rotate the head (click away from the head and drag) so that it matches the position of the head in Figure 1.

-Leave edit mode. The gyro will appear. Use this to RESIZE the head up to the scale shown in Figure one (second panel).
To do this you may need to ZOOM right out so that the canvas is tiny
Use Keyboard '-' and then Keyboard '+' to ZOOM back in when done.

NOTE: In the exercise we have not smoothed the mesh. The head is only being used as a 'guide' for making ZTool eyelashes and we will not be needed it when the tutorial is complete. If you want to smooth a mesh click here

MAKE AN EYELASH

-The eyelash will be made on a separate layer to the head. In the LAYER panel click into the small window with your eye (See figure 2.) A second click will remove the little orange triangle switching off the layer.

-Then click on the second small window (Ringed in orange in in figure 3.) This means you are now working on the second layer and layer 1 is switched off (Invisible)

Figure 4

NOTE:
For the example in Figure 4. I have used a SHINY material. This was done to help you see the shape of the lash. I have found that it is better to use a material with a low SPECULARITY setting for a final image.

-Draw a 3DRing into the document window. Make sure the Gyro and MOVE is activated (W)

-Go to the TOOL>MODIFIERS panel and adjust the parameters in the INITIALIZE menu. This changes the shape of the 3D Ring into a single eyelash

Coverage 170 Half a ring, nearly ;)
SRadius 9 Small Radius, makes the lash thicker
Scale 0.01 Makes the lash pointy

TIP: Save the 3DRing NOW as a ZTOOL (eyelash.ZTL). Better safe than sorry!
TOOL>INVENTORY>SAVE AS

-Clear the layer (CTRL+'N'). A copy of the eyelash is still in the TOOL window.
MAKING A MULTI MARKER EYELASH

The MultiMarker Tool is a way to make a composite Polymesh out of a number of different objects. For the tutorial we are going to combine 10-15 of our eyelashes together to make a composite eyelash ZTool.

-Switch the head/eye layer back on (Click in to the little window, see figure 3.)

-Make sure you go back to the blank layer to start creating the eyelashes. (Second box)

Panel 1.

p2.
-Draw an eyelash into the document window. Using the gyro reposition it so that it is protruding out of the eye at the right hand side.(P1)

TIP: In Gyro mode use keyboard commands to switch to:
'W' MOVE Click away from the eye, moving up and down with the mouse moves the lash in and out of the screen.
'E' SCALE Click inside the Gyro and move the mouse to scale it up and down
'R' ROTATE Allows you to rotate the lash on all axis using the colored rings.

-Practice these if you are not familiar with them as there are lots of changes during this part of the tutorial.

-MARK the eyelash position (Keyboard 'M'). This places a Marker from the TRANSFORM panel (P2)
p3.
-SNAPSHOT a copy of the eyelash into the DOCUMENT WINDOW. CTRL+S. (p3)

This stamps a copy into the window and leaves a copy still in gyro mode

-Move the new copy to the right and rotate it slightly (p3) Make sure the thick end is touching the edge of the eyelid. Do this by moving in and out of the screen.
p4.
-Mark it (M)

-SNAPSHOT it (CTRL+S)

-Move/Rotate it.

-Repeat.

Getting the idea?
p5.
-Mark it (M)

-SNAPSHOT it (CTRL+S)

-Move/Rotate and maybe scale it down a little

-Repeat.

-Once you reach the end of the eye it is time to use the MultiMarker tool.
p6.

-Go to the TOOL Panel and choose MULTIMARKER (P6.)

-This has now made a Multimarker tool out of the combined eyelashes.

p7.

-To turn this into a Polymesh object (A composite) use MAKE POLYMESH from the TOOL PANEL (p7)
Figure 5. Shows you a copy of the eyelash in black and a wireframe version of the same in orange.

If we saved this out as a ZTOOL now it would be over a MEG in size so we need to reduce the polygon count by using

OPTIMIZE in the TOOL>MODIFIERS>
DEFORMATIONS panel

Figure 5.
-The result is a much lower resolution version of our eyelash ZTOOL

TIP: Save the eyelash NOW as a ZTOOL (eyelashcomp.ZTL).

Better safe than sorry!

The image below was created using a Multimarker ZTool for the eyelashes. The black around the lids is painted onto the head after placing the eyelashes.

I will be producing a tutorial showing how to position the ZTool in the image at a later date.
